effect of milk thistle (silybum marianum l.) on biochemical parameters and immunity of broiler chicks fed aflatoxin b1 after three weeks

چکیده
background: this study was conducted to determine the efficacy of milk thistle seeds (mtss) in counteracting the toxic effects of aflatoxin b1 (afb1) in a contaminated diet fed to broilers.methods: two dietary inclusion rates of afb1 (0, 0.250 and 500 ppb) and mts (0, 0.5 and 1%) were tested in a 3×3 factorial manner. the effect of nine experimental treatments was assessed using 216 one-d-old ross 308 male broiler chicks in a randomized complete design with 4 replicates of 6 birds each from one to 21 days of age. the effects of dietary afb1 and mts on serum biochemistry factors, antibody titer against newcastle disease (nd) and influenza disease (id) in broilers were evaluated at the end of this period. results: statistical analysis of the main effects of diets indicated no significant changes in uric acid, cholesterol, triglycerides, low density lipoprotein (ldl), id, and phosphorus compared to the control (p>0.01). also, addition of 500 ppb of dietary afb1 into the diet was associated with significant decreases in serum glucose, calcium, high density lipoprotein (hdl), and nd compared to the control group (p<0.01). the contaminated diet significantly increased the activities of aspartate aminotransferase (ast) and alanine aminotransferase (alt) (p<0.05). conclusion: milk thistle showed protective effects and resulted in some serum enzyme activities and serum biochemical changes associated with aflatoxin toxicity.

متن کاملMilk Thistle (Silybum marianum)
Milk thistle is a well known and commonly used herb, used particularly in hepatic diseases. It has very potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antifibrotic properties (1). As a single agent its therapeutic effects in liver disease appear to be modest (2,3,4,5). Herbal medicines and supplements are likely to be much more beneficial when used synergistically in combinations or formulas. Milk ...
متن کاملEffect of milk thistle (Silybum marianum) on the pharmacokinetics of irinotecan.
PURPOSE Milk thistle (Silybum marianum) is one of the most commonly used herbal therapies, and its principal constituent silybin significantly inhibits cytochrome P450 isoform 3A4 (CYP3A4) and UDP glucuronosyltransferase isoform 1A1 (UGT1A1) in vitro. Here, we investigated whether milk thistle affects the pharmacokinetics of irinotecan, a substrate for CYP3A4 and UGT1A1, in humans. EXPERIMENT...
متن کاملSilybin, a Major Bioactive Component of Milk Thistle (Silybum marianum L. Gaernt.)-Chemistry, Bioavailability, and Metabolism.
Milk thistle (Silybum marianum) is a medicinal plant that has been used for thousands of years as a remedy for a variety of ailments. The main component of S. marianum fruit extract (silymarin) is a flavonolignan called silybin, which is not only the major silymarin element but is also the most active ingredient of this extract, which has been confirmed in various studies. This compound belongs...
متن کاملPhylogenetic and chemical diversity of fungal endophytes isolated from Silybum marianum (L) Gaertn. (milk thistle)
Use of the herb milk thistle (Silybum marianum) is widespread, and its chemistry has been studied for over 50 years. However, milk thistle endophytes have not been studied previously for their fungal and chemical diversity. We examined the fungal endophytes inhabiting this medicinal herb to determine: (1) species composition and phylogenetic diversity of fungal endophytes; (2) chemical diversit...

Effects of accelerated aging and seed priming treatments were studied on milk thistle seeds during germination process. Experiment was performed in a factorial based on Complete Randomized Design (CRD). Treatments were Salicylic acid concentrations (0, 500, 1000, 1500 and 2000 ppm) and accelerated aging for (0, 48, 96 and 144 hours under 45 °C and 95% humidity) with three replications. Our ...
